Cartwright is located on the south east coast of Labrador, and lies at the entrance of
Sandwich Bay. Chosen for its strategic location, the community was named after its
founder, English merchant and explorer, Captain George Cartwright, who established a
settlement as well as a fish and fur trading business at the site in 1775. A community
of 600, Cartwright's survival is largely dependent upon the seasonal crab fishery.

Air: Flights to Cartwright from Goose Bay are offered
(Monday, Wednesday, &Friday) by Air Labrador at a cost of $430.00 return; St. Anthony
to Cartwright - $430.00 return (Monday only). Travel times after March is
subject to change, please check with the school for updates. Also,
airfare is subject to change at airlines discretion.
Marine: Moving your supplies to Cartwright can be done through the Sir Robert
Bond which is a passenger/vehicle/freight ferry out of Goose Bay. The
boat leaves quite regularly and there is no limit on how much you can
ship. The cost is approximately $40.00 for 500 lbs. The ferry takes
approximately 24 hours before arriving in Cartwright. To arrange

Cartwright is a transportation
port for Northern Labrador, Black Tickle, Rigolet and Goose Bay.
Land:
Cartwright now has a road connection to Blanc Sablon, PQ (411km, south)
where, from April to early January, a 1 1/2 hr. ferry ride
will take you the island portion of the province at St. Barbe, NL.
Generally, this is a 6hr. drive on the gravel Trans Labrador Highway. This
road is not always open during winter due to heavy snow conditions, check
the government's website
for further information on this highway.
There are many communities to visit along the way and the scenery is beautiful!
Local:
Personal vehicles are used and the road is open during the winter,
however, a snowmobile is the preferred mode of transportation.

cable T.V. - provides 20 channels.
Mail: Local Post Office - open Monday - Friday 9-12 am and 1-5 pm and
Saturday - 9am to 1 pm . Any items shipped may be mailed to your
attention to: Henry Gordon Academy, P. O. Box 300, Cartwright, Labrador,
A0K 1V0. You will then be able to pick up your packages at the school
upon arrival.
Medical: Local clinic - two nurses, a public health nurse and an
ambulance service. In cases of emergency a Med-Evac plane is flown in. A
doctor visits approximately once a month and the dentist every 6 weeks.

Retail
Outlet: Four convenience stores, however, because of the high prices,
teachers traditionally place their food order upon arrival and have it
shipped in on the boat. They order enough food and dry goods to
last them throughout the winter. A loan is available to coastal
Labrador teachers to buy food in bulk. Arrangements have to
made through the Nfld./Lab Credit union with payments being
deducted through the payroll deduction plan.
Accommodations: One, three bedroom board house, completely furnished in a private
location in the community. It is complete with two double beds,
sofa bed, computer desk, entertainment cabinet, three dressers,
coffee and end tables dining room set, washer, dryer, dishwasher,
freezer, refrigerator, stove and wood stove. It is on a spacious lot,
with a lawn, a 12' x 16' utility shed, 12' x 18' patio and a 12' x 12'
dog kennel. It is connected to the town water, however, it does
have its own septic system.
Sports, Recreation
& Leisure: Availability of a new gymnasium. Snowmobiling, hunting, fishing, hiking,
camping etc. Ample opportunity to go fishing and hunting small game and water fowl,
therefore, bring your rods, rifles and shotguns.
Education: Henry Gordon Academy a K-12 school under the jurisdiction of the
Labrador School Board. The school currently has an enrolment of 109
students. Currently there are 12 teachers on staff which includes 1
administrator.
Banking: Primarily, teachers use cheques or direct banking to pay bills and
purchase items at the various stores throughout the community. Interac,
and visa are accepted in most places. However, if you need to do
banking, you can do so at the Eagle River Credit Union which is located
near the school.
Household: Bedclothes, T.V. Stereo, VCR (cable in community), dishes (may not be
provided in the rented house). Check in advance of arrival.
Clothing: Rain gear for fall and spring and very warm clothing for winter as it can get
quite cold.
