Hopedale |
|
With a population of 671, the community of Hopedale is situated on a peninsula amid surrounding hills that dominate the landscape. The land is comprised of low lying spruce woodland mixed with a tundra cover of lichen and Caribou moss. Its landscape is dominated by a surrounding marine environment that is interspersed with smaller islands inhabited by numerous migratory sea birds. There are many lichen and moss covered rocky areas colored by berries, small plants and bushes.
Life in the community of Inuit, Settler and mixed Inuit/Settler decent revolves around seasonal activities of hunting and fishing. Residents pursue subsistence and recreational activities such as hunting, trapping, boating, ski-dooing, and camping in outlying bays. Economic activity centers around government organizations and private businesses. In a sculptured landscape of winter snow and windswept ocean the inhabitants pursue a livelihood that is still reflective of a traditional Inuit/Settler lifestyle.
