Nain is the most northern community found on the coast of Labrador. Nestled between two mountains with Mount Sophie to the south and Nain Hill to the north, the community faces a large harbour which supplies the nearly 1300 people with their main means of transportation both in summer and winter. The surrounding landscape includes mountains, tundra, woodland areas, bays, islands, fjords and lakes. The local wildlife is made up of caribou, wolves, foxes, black bears, many types of birds and an occasional polar bear. The people of the community are mostly of Inuit descent, with some people of European and mixed descent.

Water Nain is fully served with a town water supply going to every house in the
community.
Sewage All houses are hooked into a town sewage system.
Fuel Woodward's Oil Ltd owns and operate the community gas and oil station.
Teachers may purchase a yearly supply of furnace oil through the Labrador
School Board in the fall ( pay cheque deductible by Christmas).
Woodward's will deliver this fuel to your home, where it is stored in
drums for the winter.
Fire Station Fire service is provided by a volunteer fire brigade group of people.
Air
Air Labrador flies a Twin Otter passenger service into Nain twice a day
from Goose Bay (Sun to Fri). Interprovincial makes one flight per day into
the community from Goose Bay (Mon to Fri). Return air fare from Goose
Bay to Nain is approximately $490.00. There are also regular cargo flights
into the community each week.
Marine Labrador Marine Services (freight) originating in
Cartwright and Marine
Atlantic (passenger) originating in St. Anthony (July to November). Any
personal belongings and food items should be shipped 10 to 14 days
before arriving, if you want the items when you arrive in the community.

Mail Local Post Office open Monday to Friday plus ½ day on Saturday.
Medical Health Labrador Corporation runs the local clinic which is staffed by
nurses 24 hours a day. Public Health Nurses also work out of the clinic.
There are also visits by the doctor, dentist and eye doctor. Air Ambulance
service is provided for emergencies.

Education Labrador School Board operates two schools in the community. Jens Haven Memorial (4 to 12) and Jens Haven Memorial Primary School (K to 3). Total enrollment for both schools is approximately 400 students.
Primary School is state of the art and was open in November of 1999. This school consists of an English stream of students and an Inuktitut Immersion stream of students.
The schools contain the following:
- Gymnasium, Computer rooms, Science lab, Library, Home Economics, Industrial Arts, Music
- All classrooms contain at least one computer with Internet access.
- Life Skills (Ilusivut) Program (6 local instructors)
College of the North Atlantic has a campus in the community where they
offer a number of programs.
Teacher Apartments for teachers are located in the center of the community and Housing are no more then 2-3 minutes walk from the school.
Apartments are owned by a local businessman and by the school board
Some apartments are fully furnished including (Freezer, double bed, single bed, washer and dryer, bureaus, fridge, stove. table and chair set, couch set and living room tables). School board owned and operated units contain fridge, stove, washer and dryer. Heat is supplied by an oil furnace. Rent ranges from $550.00 to $600.00 per month plus utilities.
Banks Nain has a Bank of Montreal branch in the community, which is located in the Post Office.The Royal Bank and Scotia Bank are located in Happy Valley - Goose Bay. Direct deposit of cheques can be set up at the School Board office before coming to the coast.

Food Many of the teachers ship food items in on the boat before coming to the community to help offset the cost of food. After teachers arrive in Nain, they can obtain information on placing winter food orders from companies on the island. These food items include a winter supply of meat and dry goods. All food items can be shipped to Nain on the coastal boat.
