North West River is located in Central Labrador, approximately 35km from Happy Valley - Goose Bay. The population is approximately 600, made up from many cultures which include Innu, Inuit, Metis and Settlers. Lake Melville School has grades from K - Level III. The student population is currently 121.
North West River is surrounded by beautiful views. There are Lake Melville and the Mealy Mountains to the East, Grand Lake to the North and an endless view of Gross Water Bay to the south. Each place viewed can be traveled year round.
Major employers in the community are Labrador Inuit Health Commission, The Forestry Centre, College of the North Atlantic, Town Office, North West River Medical Clinic, Northmart, Convenient Store, Labrador Sales Convenient Store, Granny's Restaurant, the Northern Gas Bar and the Strever Taxi Company.
Power: Power is supplied by Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro. Water is supplied by the Town of North West River. The community has three Artesian Wells which come from an unlimited amount of fresh spring water. Homes are mainly electric heated. A majority of homes in the community have wood stoves.

An airport is located in Happy Valley-Goose Bay 35km away.

Atlantic shipping port is located 33 km away, near Happy Valley - Goose
Bay.
Land: The Trans Labrador Highway is open all year round and is accessible from North West River.
North West River is serviced by Aliant Telecom - NewTel which is located in Happy Valley - Goose Bay. We are connected to the F.M and A.M. Radio station from of Happy Valley - Goose Bay and Newfoundland. The town is hooked up to cable TV from the Labrador Specialty Services and we have our own local station. The post office is open daily with the exception of Sunday.
Medical: Local clinic located in North West River.
Religion: There are many religious denominations in our community. They include Roman Catholics, Anglican, United, Moravian and Pentecostal.
R.C.M.P.: The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are stationed in Happy Valley - Goose Bay
and serve our community on a regular basis.
Accommodations:
Blake's Bed and Breakfast is located on our main street, just off the North
West River Highway.
Sports, Recreation & Leisure: Recreation in North West River consists of snowmobiling, fishing, skating, skiing, hunting, swimming, boat riding, hiking and camping.
Teacher Housing: There is no teacher housing available in North West River. The majority of teachers at our school live in Happy Valley - Goose Bay.
Banking: The Royal Bank and the Scotia Bank are both located in Happy Valley - Goose Bay. Interac is available locally.
These items can be purchased locally or in nearby Happy Valley-Goose Bay; however, you will need appropriate winter clothing [Warm winter hat, mitts, boots, jacket, snowpants, scarf or face mask].
