Sheshatshui

Back To Schools / Towns

The community of Sheshatshui is one of only two Innu communities located in Labrador. It is important to note that Innu and Inuit are two separate aboriginal groups with distinct language and culture.  Sheshatshui is located where the waters of Grand Lake flow into Lake Melville at North West River. It offers many and varied scenic panoramas as well as unsurpassed snowmobiling and boating opportunities. The wilds of Labrador are at your doorstep.  Sheshatshui is thirty-five kilometres from Happy Valley/Goose Bay and is connected by a paved all-weather highway and a groomed skidoo trail. HV/GB is the "hub" of Labrador and offers almost all modern conveniences. Happy Valley/Goose Bay has a population of 8,500. Sheshatshui has a population of 1,250.  Sheshatshui is currently dealing with problems similar to most native communities in Canada. The community is also poised to take a larger role in self government; notably in the areas of schooling, policing, and health care. Attendance at school is the largest problem facing education. Innu-aimun is still the first language in the community.
